What is cybercriminology
One popular definition of cybercrime is criminal activity done with or to computer technology. This means that cybercrime includes behaviors where computers are used to commit a crime, such as cyberstalking, identity theft. Cybercrime can also include behaviors where the target of the crime is a computer, such as hacking.
Cybercrime is on the rise.
Research published in Cybercrime Magazine asserts that the costs of cybercrime will “grow by 15 percent per year over the next five years, reaching $10.5 trillion USD annually by 2025, up from $3 trillion USD in 2015.”
Moreover, data collected from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center also shows a rise in cybercrime. In 2018, there were about 350,000 complaints to the center and a reported 2.7 billion dollars in losses. By 2022, the number of complaints had risen to 800,000 and a reported dollar loss of about 10 billion.
